Thanks to the work of Sharon on our team, she was able fulfill one of the desires Carl Backstrom had expressed a couple times.
The Oracle ACE program was "designed to recognize and reward members of the Oracle Technology and Applications communities for their contributions to those communities. These individuals are technically proficient (when applicable) and willingly share their knowledge and experiences." This really epitomized Carl - he was always ready and willing to share his vast knowledge with any one.
Well, as luck would have it, the folks at the Oracle Technology Network decided that Oracle employees could no longer be awarded the ACE designation. And that bothered Carl a little bit, as he was a very active contributor to the community every day. It just would have been nice to receive that designation.
Thanks to Sharon's suggestion, this has now been achieved: http://forums.oracle.com/forums/profile.jspa?userID=354238
Awesome...well done.
ReplyDeleteCarl was definitely an ACE. It was nice they archived his User Forum profile. But I'm disappointed that Carl can't be found in Find Oracle ACEs (http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=19297). Ironically, this is an Apex application!
ReplyDeleteCouldn't they archive his profile there?
He has really deserved this award for all the work he did!
ReplyDeleteVery well deserved, as you say Carl epitomised what the ACE program represents.
ReplyDeleteJohn.
I agree, Carl was awesome and every day we profit from what he did.
ReplyDeleteHe's no longer, but his code, his thoughts and the nice memories will be forever.
Dimitri
Carl always been an ACE!
ReplyDelete@Stew,
ReplyDeleteThat application is intentionally not showing Oracle employees. You don't see Tom Kyte in there. You don't see me in there. Why? I don't know - I didn't write it.
Joel
Well done Joel.
ReplyDeleteFlavio
Well deserved! If there was ever a lead to follow...
ReplyDeleteA very honorable move! Well deserved for his knowledge, his effort and his enthusiasm.
ReplyDelete~Dietmar.
Joel,
ReplyDeleteA big thanks to you and Sharon for taking the time to honor Carl. The definition of an Oracle ACE only brushes the surface of the what Carl was all about. He definitely deserved it, he was in a class all by himself!
On behalf of Carl's family I would like to thank everyone involved in assigning the ACE status to Carl. I know how much that meant to him, I can clearly remember the day he told me the policy was changed (as you know Carl did not believe in keeping his 'opinions' to himself). It is wonderful to see him recognized by his peers/friends as he thoroughly enjoyed working Oracle and helping so many people.
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Cyndi Backstrom (Carl's Sister)
